Behavioral Science & Health Internship

The Behavioral Science & Health internship (BSH 5800) allows students to earn upper-division credit for experience working in a health related setting and, while optional, it is highly recommended. The internship is designed to give you "hands-on" experience in an area of health care that is of interest to you. It is an excellent way to apply what you've learned in the classroom to a real world setting, and builds your job skills, advantaging you in the job market. If you are interested in completing an internship, you MUST first talk to a program advisor.

Internship Requirements and Details

* Students can register for up to 6 semester credit hours of internship (up to 3 credits per semester, 2 semester maximum). Each semester credit hour equals 3 hours of work at the internship per week, so, to earn 3 credit hours of BSH 5800, you must work 9 hours per week at the internship for an entire semester.

* You are required to make your own internship contacts and find your own internship placement. If you are not sure where to start, contact the program advisor for guidance. You may be paid for the work and still receive credit hours, although paying positions are rare. If you already work in a health related setting you might be able to negotiate an internship at your job. Keep in mind that the goal of the internship is to learn something new, so it MUST consist of an extra project and/or hours above and beyond regular working duties and hours.

* Before registering for BSH 5800 you must consult with a program advisor and turn in an internship prospectus for approval.

* To be eligible for a credit grade for BSH 5800 (BSH 5800 can only be taken as Credit/No-Credit) students must satisfactorily complete the required internship hours and write a 6-8 page paper describing the experience and its relevance to both classroom learning and the student's career goals. Upon completion and approval of both the internship and the required paper, a grade of "credit" will be given for the internship.
