Welcome to Behavioral Science and Health

Dr. GachetThe Behavioral Science and Health Program takes as its starting point the multidimensional character of human health. Health status may be related to many factors beyond pathogens, including lifestyle, environmental exposures, socio-economic status, cultural affiliation, poor communication, low compliance with medical instructions, or access to health services. This major is designed to provide students with the broad, interdisciplinary foundation for understanding health and to sensitively and effectively address health care issues in multidimensional contexts.

The Behavioral Science and Health major is interdepartmental in structure and includes an optional internship for students to gain practical experience in a community health setting. Substantive courses from a wide variety of fields -- research methods and quantitative skills, epidemiology, biology, behavioral sciences, philosophy, economics, administration, public policy, and business -- provide perspectives on health care from various social and administrative contexts. A capstone course offered in the senior year that addresses a single issue from these different perspectives is designed to add coherence to the program.

Students in the program will gain familiarity with the many fields related to health and be in a favorable position to make appropriate career choices. They will graduate with the skills to seek jobs in research and administrative positions in public and private health care settings or enter graduate programs in the behavioral sciences and health, public health, health service, medicine, administration, law, as well as other fields.
